Cheryl Beere began forging steel furniture and lighting sculptures in her small workshop back in New Zealand in 1992, with designs inspired by the surrounding bush and local landscape. Moving to the USA in 1996 she was commissioned for her work by local businesses and individuals in Oakland and Berkeley. This followed by an apprenticeship with local jewelry designer, Rebecca Norman where Cheryl’s sculpting and forging skills were translated into silver jewelry design and construction. Cheryl set up her own business, Jane B. Designs, in Oakland in 2001, and has since been working by commission and selling her evolving collections at selected stores and galleries throughout the country.
Each piece of jewelry is handmade by order to individual specifications, crafted from scratch by the artist right down to every link of the handmade chains, using mostly sterling silver but also gold and platinum upon request. Most commonly shells gathered from the beaches of California, Mexico, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and Europe are used in the work, and on occasion precious, semi precious gems, river and beach rocks. Due to the select nature of materials used during fabrication, no two pieces are exactly alike and therefore vary slightly from the samples you see. These limited editions guarantee your purchase to be as unique and individual as the person who comes to wear it.
Designed and built to stand daily use and the test of time, Jane B. Designs tableware/ cutlery is hand forged from sterling silver with handles individually crafted to each piece. Cheryl's work emphasizes the re-use and recycling of our precious resources, she achieves this by using recycled woods for the tableware handles which are then securely riveted on to ensure durability and strength, pieces that you can mix and match and with proper care will last throughout the years.
In addition to being a metalworker, Cheryl has for many years been a chef specializing in vegetarian and macrobiotic cuisine. Her cooking career has taken her all over the world and she has cooked for families and celebrities alike. Cheryl has toured, as personal chef, with artists such as the Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Beck and Tori Amos. Cheryl has also published a cookbook in her home country, New Zealand. |
